End of Summer

Published August 15, 2010 by LS Murphy

While summer isn’t officially over, it feels like it is. The temperatures remain steamy and the pool still calls our names.

But school is starting.

That’s the official end to summer for most of us. Even the adults.

I tend to get a little nostalgic this time of year. The first day of school was always a great anticipation. When I was in grade school, we lived on a farm ten miles outside town. Obviously, we didn’t have the internet or cell phones to stay in touch. In fact, at our house, we didn’t even have a cordless phone which meant talking on the phone equalled staying in the house. And who wanted to do that!

The beginning of school meant more than the daily grind of learning. It meant friends. I could see my friends, catch up on what was going on in the world and what we did over the summer. Sure, I spent some time on the phone with them but it wasn’t the same as seeing them.

The second best part of this time of year…SCHOOL SUPPLIES! I love shopping for school supplies. New pens. New notebooks. New backpacks. All the things needed for higher education. Plus new clothes. Who can start school without new clothes that show off how awesome we became over the summer? I have to keep myself from buying those supplies.

Even though the calendar tells me it’s summer. Even though the temperatures are ridiculously hot. It feels like the end of summer even though I’m no longer a slave to the school grind.
