Four years ago, my good friend Huston Martin held the 1st Disco Ball Awards in his apartment. The idea was to honor friends while showing his compilation video of the previous year. Since then, the awards have expanded dramatically.
Those of us who have the honor of this exclusive invitation do not take it lightly. This is an event worthy of the Oscars or Golden Globes. We dress to the nines, and tens in some cases. Our hair is perfectly coiffed. Our shoes the latest style. We go above and beyond. Because we want to make the video for the following year.
Huston and his friend Josh create an amazing video that signifies the events of the previous year. Each video starts off with New Year’s celebrations and includes such notorious parties as St. Louis’ Mardi Gras in February, St. Patrick’s Day in a neighborhood known as Dogtown, and trips to the wineries in Hermann, MO.
The awards often reflect things we’ve done throughout the previous year.
Huston’s awards range from the mild, Most Flamboyant Dancer, to the extreme which I can’t describe because this blog is PG. I felt fortunate to win my fourth award. This year I won “Most Likely to Express Her Opinion of Facebook” award. If you know me, then you know this is true to the extreme.
But it isn’t about the Awards or even abut the video. It’s about true friendship. Huston Martin is a kind man who loves his friends dearly. If you see him every weekend or only two or three times a year, he treasures every minute of your time together. He will always give you a hug and a smile.
2010 is barely underway. There will be many moments for the video. And it will cumulate in the 5th Annual Disco Ball Awards next year. I, for one, will be there. As long as I have the privilege of the invite.
I just hope I make the video.
